PORTSMOUTH, Va. — In the race for the next sheriff of Portsmouth, Michael Moore is projected to win Tuesday's election, with 68% of the vote compared to Jim Cullen's 32% of the vote.
The incumbent Democrat was first elected in 2017. During his time, he said he has focused on employee pay, crime reduction, relocating the jail, and ending the contract with the Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Through the office’s community programs, he said he's gotten to learn about each demographic across Portsmouth.
“All age groups... when they’re very, very young to the senior program we have, but in between that are the people who are incarcerated," he previously told 13News Now. "So, what do we do to facilitate a better life for them leaving than what they were before they came into our custody.”
