RICHMOND, Va. — Democrat Abigail Spanberger has won the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election, the Associated Press projects, defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
Spanberger, a former CIA officer and U.S. Representative, captured 57% of the vote compared to Earle-Sears’ 43% , according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections.
Spanberger built her campaign on a platform of bipartisanship, moderate policies, and experience representing Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. Her victory marks a shift in leadership as she succeeds Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who was ineligible to run for a second consecutive term.
