ANNAPOLIS, Md. —
The No. 20 UofL women tipped off the season against No. 1 UConn at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The Huskies, the defending national champions, jumped out to a 25-9 lead after a quarter and fought off a late charge from the Cards for a 79-66 win.
Sarah Strong led UConn with 21 points. Azzi Fudd added 20.
Laura Ziegler led UofL with 16 points. Imari Berry and Skylar Jones each scored 13.
UofL trailed 65-40 with 9:28 remaining, but responded with a 13-2 run to get within 73-63 on a Berry drive.
The game was originally scheduled for Ramstein Air Base in Germany, but was moved due to the U.S. government shutdown.
The Cards (0-1) will be back in action on at 2 p.m. Sunday hosting Northern Kentucky.
