MINNEAPOLIS — With first-choice ranked votes counted in Minneapolis, incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey leads a crowded pool of mayoral candidates with 41.76% of the vote.

As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, challenger Omar Fateh had earned the second-most first-choice votes with 31.72%, followed by DeWayne Davis with 13.73%.

The race is far from over, however, as ballots continue to be counted Wednesday to weigh voters' second- and third-choice candidates. As is clear from the results in St. Paul's mayoral contest, ranked choice makes a huge difference: Kaohly Her ousted incumbent mayor Melvin Carter with a strong second-round showing.
