BEVIL OAKS, Texas — Voters in Jefferson County have approved Proposition A , allowing Emergency Services District No. 1 to retain a portion of state sales tax revenue to strengthen fire protection and emergency medical services.
The proposition passed with 208 votes or 75.36% of the total 276 votes.
The measure passed Tuesday, allowing the district to keep part of the state’s existing 8.25% sales tax within the community. The funding will not increase taxes but will instead redirect dollars already being paid by residents to support local firefighters and paramedics.
“We don’t have volunteers to come in and staff, so with that pool diminishing we’re having to look for other sources of fire protection,” said Chief Chris Gonzales of Jefferson County ESD One. “As the population grows in
