NEW YORK (PIX11) – Incumbent New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has won his reelection bid, according to the Associated Press.
Williams maintained his seat against challenges from Republican Gonzalo Duran and independent Martin W Dolan.
The public advocate is a non-voting member of the New York City Council who can introduce and co-sponsor bills, provide oversight of city agencies and investigate citizens’ complaints about city services.
This will mark Williams’ third term in office after he won the 2019 special election to succeed Letitia James. He previously served on the New York City Council, representing the 45th District from 2010 to 2019.
Williams has said he supports a rent freeze and the closure of the Rikers Island jail complex.
