Amid chaos that is 2025, we deserve, demand better

This year is like an unenjoyable horror movie. Just when I thought the trauma of the Trump administration’s illegal executive order to dismantle USAID — a lifesaving and life-changing agency — was awful enough, Congress passed deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. Now, a government shutdown threatens vital services and the livelihoods of millions of public servants. It’s like an evil game of Whac-A-Mole.

All this comes amid rising attacks on Spanish-speaking citizens and undocumented immigrants — intersecting with countless Black and Brown communities — along with political violence and an economy slipping toward recession. It’s no wonder people want to look away.

But when our very democracy is at risk, we must choose courage over comfort.
