COLUMBIA — Nobody wants to admit it when they make a mistake. Perhaps that’s why it took so long to make the move even when it was very evident that the move should have already been made.

Shane Beamer kept seeing enough, whether it was real or simply convincing himself that he did make a move that would turn into a success, to keep Mike Shula as offensive coordinator and play-caller even as South Carolina’s season spiraled out of control.

The Gamecocks’ offensive line was extremely poor from the start of the season on, and that wasn’t Shula’s fault. He didn’t recruit those players or specifically coach them every day. And after the second game, Shula was trying to work around that weakness, to play more edges and use more of LaNorris Sellers’ natural ability to push the ball downfiel
