ST. CHARLES, Mo and SHILOH, Ill. (First Alert 4) - Local governments are launching relief efforts to support federal workers and families as the federal shutdown continues to impact communities across the bi-state region.
What’s become a common sight in the last week, St. Clair County has organized a food drive for Scott Air Force Base, the county’s largest employer, with 15,000 people working beyond its gates.
“There are numerous people affected in the second and third-order effects of this shutdown,” said Kimberly Huth, director of military affairs for St. Clair County, Illinois. “There are 15,000 people employed right beyond those gates. Whether they’re military members, whether they’re civilian furloughed or working without pay members, but also contractors.”
