MORGANTOWN -- Nonconference play can show a lot to a college basketball team before getting into the conference slate.
The West Virginia University women's basketball team's season opener against Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday night did so for the Mountaineers.
WVU earned its 12th consecutive season-opening victory by defeating the Mastodons, 83-47, but that came with multiple circles on the box score of areas to improve.
Despite the Mountaineers' lopsided victory, WVU missed eight free throws in the first quarter, turned it over 19 times and missed many opportunities around the rim.
