A number of MAGA-aligned lawmakers went into panic after the decisive victory of Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani Tuesday night in New York City’s mayoral race.
“Under [New York Gov.] Kathy Hochul’s weak catastrophic leadership, New York City has now fallen to a pro-Hamas, Defund the Police, Tax Hiking, Antisemite Jihadist Communist,” wrote Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) in a social media post late Tuesday night.
“And instead of standing up for hardworking New York families, Kathy Hochul proved once again that she is truly the Worst Governor in America with her desperate endorsement of Commie Mamdani.”
Mamdani won handily in Tuesday’s election, securing more than 50% of the vote according to the unofficial election results, receiving more than 1 million votes, the first such instance since 1969. He ran a progressive campaign pleading to implement rent freezes, build more public housing and increase taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents, some of whom went into full-blown panic after he won the Democratic nomination back in June.
For MAGA loyalists, however, Mamdani’s victory spelled the doom for the United States’ most populated city.
“NYC is so screwed,” wrote retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn late Tuesday night in a social media post on X, with Flynn being a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, having supported his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
“Never in my lifetime did I ever imagine a communist being elected in any American city,” wrote David Freeman, a self-described “MAGA Christian” and political commentator who’s amassed more than 1.6 million followers on X. “RIP NYC.”
And Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), among the most feverishly pro-Trump lawmakers in Congress, declared that the United States “must re-classify the threat of communism in our country to Cold War levels” with Mamdani’s victory. The day before the election, Ogles also shared a video of the 9/11 attacks while demanding New York “wake up,” a likely reference to Mamdani’s Islamic faith.
Other Mamdani critics, such as Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), were more subdued with their disdain for Mamdani and his victory.
“New Yorkers will learn the hard way what socialism is,” Malliotakis wrote in a
social media post on Xfollowing the election.
