BROOKLYN AND CITYWIDE — QUEENS ASSEMBLYMEMBER ZOHRAN MAMDANI HAS BEEN DECLARED THE WINNER OF THE CITY’S MAYORAL RACE, with the Associated Press naming him the winner based on his leading four boroughs . He was leading his closest opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, 50.4% to 41.6%.

Mamdani’s projected win makes him the first Muslim and first South Asian mayor-elect. He will lead a city with a diverse population, a significant number of whom are immigrants like himself. Born in Kampala, Uganda, he came to the U.S. at age 7 with his family and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2018.
