Gov. Kay Ivey announced she will use the state’s emergency fund to support food banks across Alabama as the federal government shutdown has suspended SNAP benefits.
The governor will release $2 million to support eight food banks, which together serve all 67 counties.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources, which administers SNAP, will also provide an additional $3 million to food banks, along with $300 to the caregivers of the 11,434 children enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to help offset costs after losing food stamps.
“There are real Alabama families who rely on SNAP to put food on their tables, and that includes more than 300,000 children, more than 102,000 seniors and those who are disabled,” Ivey said in a statement.
