Rachel Reeves has insisted she won't resign as rumours of tax hikes in the Autumn Budget rumble on. Ms Reeves said she had been appointed chancellor “not to always do what is popular, but to do what is right”.
It comes after she refused to rule out tax rises as she set out her priorities ahead of the budget later this month amid mounting speculation that she is preparing to hike income tax by up to £30 billion to plug a hole in the public finances.
The chancellor was even told by the Tories to resign if she goes ahead with raising taxes in the November 26 Budget.
She later insisted on LBC’s Tonight With Andrew Marr that she would not resign if she does make tax rises at the Budget.
