JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT/ WDAM ) - After Tuesday night’s election, Republicans no longer have a supermajority in the Mississippi Senate; a supermajority the Republicans held for 13 years.

This comes after the newly elected and returning Democratic senators in District 2, District 11, and District 45, and after a federal judge ruled that the Mississippi Supreme Court electoral map violated the Voting Rights Act.

The judge then ordered that the state redraw parts of the map to better represent the population within them.

With the maps redrawn, six Senate seats and one House seat were up for grabs on Tuesday. Two additional vacant seats were also on the ballot.

To keep the supermajority, Republicans needed to hold 35 seats.
