Air Force Global Strike Command conducted a test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) early Wednesday from Vandenberg Space Force Base, officials confirmed.

The test, designated GT-254, evaluated the reliability, operational readiness, and accuracy of the missile system, a key component of the United States' nuclear deterrent.

Officials confirmed the launch to be part of a routinely scheduled series of activities to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of the Minuteman III.

Airmen from the 625th Strategic Operations Squadron initiated the launch using the Airborne Launch Control System aboard a U.S. Navy E-6B Mercury aircraft. This system serves as a backup command and control for the ICBM force, ensuring continuous operational capability.
