Canadians are using electronic payment methods more than ever and depending upon where you are, it may be your only way to pay.
Entertainment venues like Toronto’s BMO Field and Scotiabank Arena have gone cashless, so you’ll need to bring a debit or credit card to purchase food or souvenirs.
But predictions of a cashless society haven’t quite materialized, according to the Bank of Canada.
The findings come from the Bank of Canada’s 2024 methods-of-payment survey . Nearly all survey respondents said they owned a debit card in 2024 (99 per cent) and debit card adoption has been high and stable since 2009. Nearly nine in 10 people said they owned a credit card in 2024.
But the Bank of Canada said its survey reveals cash hasn’t lost its place in day-to-day commerce.
Cash use remains
