Preble, N.Y.- E. Nathan Shirley was elected as Preble town supervisor Tuesday, defeating incumbent James Doring.

Shirley received 347 votes, while Doring secured 244 votes, according to unofficial results.

Both are Republicans, but Doring ran on the Democratic line after he lost his party’s support earlier this year.

The town has been torn over whether to ban short-term rentals along three lakes . Some renters sued the town over a ban imposed last December. They won in court.

Shirley was on the side of the renters. He and the two Republicans who favor short-term rentals along with him were elected to the board.

Doring, supervisor for 18 years, supported the ban, and he’d vowed to appeal the court decision if he won the race. The election results kill that idea for now.
