DALLAS — As more Texans struggle to put food on the table, the organizations meant to help them are feeling the strain too.

An Associated Press poll earlier this year found that grocery costs are the top source of economic stress for Americans — ranking ahead of concerns about pay, housing, child care, or debt. For many North Texans, that growing financial burden has meant turning to food banks for help.

The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), which says it can provide about three meals for every dollar donated, has distributed roughly 10.2 million meals each month in recent months — nearly the same volume as the 10.5 million meals per month it delivered during each of the past two fiscal years. The organization estimates that 1 in 6 North Texans, or about 744,000 people, are food insecure
