STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who is set to become thefirst Muslim leader of New York City, secured a historic win in New York City on Tuesday, but Staten Islanders did everything they could to try to prevent that new reality.

As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, unofficial results from the New York City Board of Elections show that Mamdani has received 50.4% of the citywide vote, compared to 41.6% for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and 7.1% for Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Voter turnout across the city surpassed two million, a benchmark that hasn’t been reached in a New York City mayoral election since 1969, with 2,055,921 votes tallied thus far.
