NEW YORK (PIX11) – The United Way of New York City partners with over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and community organizations to combat the escalating hunger crisis.

With 1.8 million New Yorkers losing SNAP benefits during the federal shutdown, many families are struggling to put food on the table. At the Little Sisters of the Assumption pantry in East Harlem, more than 500 people are fed every day.

Leaders say shelves are emptying faster than ever, and families are turning to emergency food services just to survive. One of them is Barren Jenkins, who says the pantry is his lifeline after losing his wife.

Now, without SNAP support, he worries about where his next meal will come from.
