LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - With 10 cases of bird flu reported in the region recently, many are wondering how it will impact the people here.

Indiana State Board of Animal Health Public Information Director, Denise Derrer Spears, says birds migrating south are why Indiana is currently seeing an uptick in bird flu.

“Wild birds are really the carrier for the Avian Influenza virus, especially migratory waterfowl like ducks and geese,” she said.

Even though cases have increased, Derrer Spears also said there’ll be minimal impact on food safety.

“The products you buy in the grocery store the eggs, the poultry meat, the chicken, the turkey, it’s all safe to eat, so there’s no issue there,” she said.
