TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County Commissioners were given an update on Wednesday about plans to build an African American History and Cultural Center.

The facility has been in the planning stages for years, and advocates say it's long overdue.

"The center is envisioned as a vibrant, multipurpose space, dedicated to celebrating stories, achievements and culture of the African American community," said Dr. Brett Snowden, the pastor of the Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Commissioner Gwen Myers is also a long time advocate of the facility.

"The African American Community, we don't have a place that we can go to," Myers said. "We don't have a place that we can tell our story."
