Demolition has begun on the site of the long-vacant City Motel on Route 1 South in the Avenel section of Woodbridge.

The motel will be a new Cambria Suites Hotel.

Mayor John E. McCormac and the Woodbridge Redevelopment Agency held a demolition and groundbreaking ceremony last week at the former motel site at 938-943 U.S. Route 1 South.

The redevelopment project will transform prime Route 1 real estate into a hotel operated by Choice Hotels International.

Plans call for a five-story, 104-room hotel and commercial center, developed through a partnership between JAP Real Estate and Kontos Construction Co.
