CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Several North Carolina Republican congressmen have sent a letter to North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, requesting that the National Guard be deployed in Charlotte.

North Carolina Republicans cite a rise in murders Uptown, an increase in aggravated assaults with knives and guns, plus a shortage of officers within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Uptown Charlotte has the city’s highest population density, so a 200% rise in homicides in the area is getting the attention of several U.S. Congressmen.

In a letter sent Wednesday morning, U.S. Congressmen Pat Harrigan, Chuck Edwards, and Mark Harris expressed concern with Governor Stein’s refusal to deploy National Guard troops to Charlotte.
