The first school district employee in Bristol is now allowed to carry a gun at work.

The Bristol Voard of Education voted unanimously to approve a policy that allows Stephen Cabelus, the director of safety and security, to be armed.

All students in the district may soon see Cabelus armed at school. He is a former state trooper.

“That extra layer of protection is necessary and well warranted in our society today and I’m excited to get this going," Cabelus said.

The district currently has armed school resource officers who are employed by the police department at middle and high schools.

At this time, the board said they are not hiring more armed officers, but board member Russell Anderson was in favor of doing so.
