DES MOINES, Iowa —
Iowa is missing the mark in several key categories of a new national report on lung cancer.
The state is below the national average in the number of new cases, survival rates and surgery-as-first-treatment according to the American Lung Association 2025 State of Lung Cancer report .
Results show smoking and radon are two widespread risks for Iowans. The state's adult smoking rank shows higher tobacco use than much of the country, and Iowa's radon ranking places it among the worst for exposure risk. The invisible gas is a leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
