PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Police have arrested four people in connection with a brutal attack on a teenager on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus. Three of the suspects appeared in court on Wednesday.
Eighteen-year-old Justin Otis and Donnell Young, along with 19-year-old Jayden Smith, pleaded not guilty over the attack that happened at the end of September. According to court documents, the victim was assaulted near the Hassayampa dorms .
The case comes amid a string of violent incidents across the southeastern portion of the Valley involving groups of teens. Those crimes prompted lawmakers to create a new felony known as “ swarming .”
One of those cases involved the beating death of Preston Lord, which inspired the law known as “ Preston’s Law .”
