The trial of former Lauderdale County Judge Gil Self is nearing a verdict as the jury prepares to deliberate.
On Wednesday, both sides delivered their closing arguments at the Lauderdale County Courthouse.
Prosecutors accused Self of misusing about $146,000 in public funds during his tenure. They alleged he used public money for personal trips and falsely labeled expenses as work-related. The state highlighted purchases like a couch, a diploma frame, and sunglasses as examples of misuse.
The defense countered these claims, arguing that all expenses were properly processed and any errors were unintentional. They also stated that Self lacked proper training on handling public funds.
The jury is set to return Thursday at 8:30 a.m. to receive instructions before beginning deliberations.
