Karnatakaa BJP MP from Uttara Kannada, Vishveshwara Kageri, triggered a political row after saying Jana Gana Mana was originally written to welcome British officials and that Vande Mataram should have been chosen as India’s national anthem instead.
At an event, Kageri remarked, “There was a demand that Vande Mataram should have been the national anthem. Our ancestors for whatever reasons said let Vande Mataram and that song that was written to welcome the British officials ‘Jana gana mana’ both be there.”
His statement invited sharp criticism from Karnataka minister and Congress leader Priyank Kharge, who accused the BJP and RSS of spreading “WhatsApp history.”
