A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court, demanding a counter to the rising air pollution across India. The petition has been filed by Luke Christopher Coutinho.

The petitioner states that the level of air pollution in the country has reached the proportion of a public health emergency, which is adversely affecting the health of people in rural and urban areas.

The petition also states that in Delhi alone, approximately 2.2 million schoolchildren have suffered such severe lung damage that their recovery is difficult. This has also been confirmed by government and medical studies.
