Netflix's latest release Death By Lightning delves into the motives behind Charles Guiteau's assassination of President James Garfield.

In 1881, James Garfield, portrayed by Michael Shannon, was elected as the Republican party representative before ascending to the presidency of the United States .

Meanwhile, unsuccessful lawyer Charles Guiteau (played by Matthew Macfadyen ) was grappling with his purpose in life until he decided to "assist" Garfield in his presidential campaign by drumming up support.

However, in July 1881, roughly six months into his term, Garfield was shot twice by Guiteau at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad station in Washington, DC, succumbing to his injuries two months later.
