Columbia Public Works is gearing up for the winter weather season. New and more experienced staff members conducted a dry run of snow plow routes Wednesday morning, Nov. 5.
This is not the only day people may see plow vehicles out on Columbia roads ahead of winter weather, though, according to Richard Stone, Public Works engineering and operations manager. He said plans for the upcoming season are relatively similar to previous years, though there have been some tweaks.
Multiple dry runs will help train the newest staff, especially in areas of town with cul-de-sacs, which are more difficult to navigate, especially in single-axle or tandem-axled trucks. A single-axle truck has four rear wheels, while a tandem has eight and can carry more tonnage of street treatment salt.
