LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Earlier this year, the Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville’s South End announced it would halt work on a maternity ward, which would have allowed mothers to give birth in that area for the first time in more than 50 years.
The Louisville Metro Council is now deciding to how to use millions of dollars it earmarked for the project, but opinions are split on where the money should go.
In August, UofL Health announced the Birthing Place would not open as scheduled, citing impending cuts to Medicaid.
Roughly $5.2 million in funds for the project from Metro Louisville was not spent on the project. Metro Councilwoman Jennifer Chappell, D-District 15, proposed that money be used to support several South End projects.
