An 83-year-old who had been reported missing was found dead behind a Market Basket in New Bedford on Monday night, the Bristol County District Attorney’s office said.

New Bedford police got a 911 call around 8:44 p.m. Monday reporting a dead man had been found near 122 Sawyer St. behind the Market Basket. When police arrived, they found 83-year-old Antonio Valente, of New Bedford, at the shoreline. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Bristol County District Attorney Tom Quinn said in a statement.

Valente had been reported missing the day before by his family, prompting a Silver Alert and a search of surrounding communities.

Foul play is not suspected in the man’s death. The cause and manner of his death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
