Electric vehicle drivers face a double hit at the Budget amid fears the Chancellor will not be able to afford to offset the new taxes expected to hit them with any sweeteners .

Rachel Reeves is believed to be looking at introducing a new pay-per mile tax on all EVs in a bid to fill the increasing shortfall in revenue from fuel duty as more drivers opt to switch to electric cars.

Under plans being considered, the Treasury will bring in a new 3p per mile charge on EV owners by 2028, on top of other taxes drivers already have to pay. New Feature
