Crews have unfurled an oversized American flag on the side of the new Hudson’s building in downtown Detroit.

The flag spans 141 feet (42.98 meters) by 85 feet (25.91 meters) and is located on the Woodward Avenue facade. It will stay in place until the end of the month and be in place for the city’s Thanksgiving Parade on Nov. 27.

It’s a nod to the massive American flag – believed at the time to be the largest in the world -- that first appeared on the side of the J.L. Hudson Department Store in 1923.

In 1998, more than a century after Hudson's opened shop, the 25-story building was demolished.

The new, 12-story Hudson’s Detroit building opened this year. General Motors is relocating its headquarters there.

Dan Gilbert’s property management company, Bedrock, developed the new Hudson’s.

“For decades, Hudson’s had the biggest American flag in the world on the building during Christmas. And it's in the Smithsonian Institution right now,” Gilbert said. “So, we can't put that exact one up, but we're replicating it. So, that's a nod to that time.”
