A long-time and often contentious U.S. politician is calling it a career — a move U.S. President Donald Trump is lauding as a “great thing for America.”
U.S. Congresswoman and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she would not see re-election to a seat she’s held for nearly four decades.
“We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy, and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear,” the 85-year-old lawmaker said in a video posted to social media .
Pelosi will serve her current term, which comes to an end in January 2027.
She became the focus of anger from Republican politicians, particularly after leading two separate impeachment proceedings against U.S. President Donald Trump.
