PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Public Schools briefly put two of its school buildings on lockout Thursday morning due to reports of ICE activity in North Portland. In a message sent to parents and staff, the district said César Chávez School and George Middle School had implemented "Secure the Perimeter" protocol.
A KGW crew arrived at one of the schools at around 10:45 a.m. and found that the lockout had been lifted. KGW has reached out to this district for further comment and will update this story if we hear back.
The earlier message from the district did not appear to indicate that the schools themselves were being targeted by ICE; it stated that PPS received reports of ICE activity "in the broader North Portland community" and implemented the lockouts "out of an abundance of caution."
