MONROVIA, Calif. (KABC) -- A second grade teacher in Monrovia was selected as one of this year's five California Teachers of the Year.

"I didn't come into teaching for the accolades, the awards, but it shows me that maybe I am making a positive impact on the lives of my students," said Dr. Heather Povinelli.

Povinelli has been teaching at Bradoaks Elementary School for more than 25 years, and becoming an educator has always been her dream.

"I was inspired as a young girl," she told Eyewitness News. "I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved my teachers. I'd watch them."
