FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - A decade after paramedic John Mackey died in a line-of-duty accident, his former colleagues are working to establish a state memorial for fallen EMS personnel.

Mackey, 40, died in 2015 when a car hit him while he was responding to a call. The 13-year veteran of Jessamine County EMS has become the face of efforts to create the Kentucky EMS Memorial.

“John wasn’t just a great paramedic. One thing you have to understand about John is that he was a great human being,” said Jamie Goodpaster, Jessamine County EMS chief.

Goodpaster delivered the news of Mackey’s death to his wife and called it “probably one of the hardest days of my professional life.”
