NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Four men received reduced sentences in a 2021 mass shooting that killed a 14-year-old girl, leaving the victim’s family and investigators disappointed.
Ronjanae Smith was fatally shot, and 14 others were injured in the May 22, 2021, shooting.
The men initially faced manslaughter and multiple assault charges that could have resulted in life sentences. Instead, they were allowed to plead guilty to significantly lesser charges after prosecutors cited a lack of evidence and witness credibility issues.
“The system failed us again,” Ronald Smith, Ronjanae Smith’s father, said. “I’m angry, it ain’t right.”
