WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui County officials will begin removing wildfire hazards near a church and elementary school after officials say the area experienced 13 fires this year.
Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will coordinate the Wildfire Risk Reduction Project, which aims to remove abandoned vehicles, gas tanks, trash piles, and overgrown vegetation.
Cleanup crews plan to target County-owned parcels within 52 acres, specifically near:
Pomaikaʻi Elementary School
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Maui Lani
Maui Lani Parkway intersections
Waiale Road intersections
Officials said the area is high-risk due to kiawe, haole koa, grasses, and flammable debris.
The cleanup is scheduled from Wednesday, Nov. 12, through Nov. 26.
