TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Democratic Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings is the latest candidate to file and publicly announce his run for Florida governor. He joins close to 30 candidates vying for the governor’s mansion.
Demings is one of the handful of well-known political figures in the crowded field. He previously served as Orange County's sheriff and Orlando's police chief.
“There will be a new sheriff in town,” Demings said.
The mayor is leaning on his resume that includes seven years as the leader of the Orange County government and his decades-long law enforcement experience to gain voter support.
“There will not be any other candidate in the race to tell you they have worked at the level that I have at the local level,” Demings said.
