(NewsNation) — The $10 million jury verdict awarded Thursday to a former Virginia schoolteacher who was shot by a 6-year-old boy will send a strong message to school systems across the country, attorneys for the injured woman say.
The civil suit filed by Abby Zwerner hinged on allegations that former assistant principal Ebony Parker ignored multiple warnings in January 2023 a young student with a troubled history was concealing a gun. The child ultimately shot Zwerner, who underwent multiple surgeries and still has a bullet lodged in her chest.
“This judgment today from this jury tells administrators across the country (to) make safety the most important thing in our school so that kids get an education and teachers can be safe,” one of Zwerner’s attorneys, Jeffrey Breit, told “Elizabeth
