LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
The Kentucky Air National Guard was among the first on scene after a UPS crash, racing in crash-rescue apparatus to knock down a massive fire and prevent further explosions.
“It was heavy flames and heavy black smoke. I’d say 100 or 200 feet in the air,” said Master Sgt. Kyle Miller, who responded with fellow Guardsmen.
With no hydrants on the airfield, Miller said the team had to be self-sustaining. “We have to bring all of our own agent to the fight. That’s why these trucks are rather large. There’s no hydrants out there on the airfield,” he said.
Working side by side with airport crews and local firefighters, the Guard deployed foam and roughly 3,000 gallons of water to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading.
