Bruce Lehrmann is at risk of arrest after failing to provide a medical certificate for his absence from court regarding car theft charges. Lehrmann and his attorney, Zali Burrows, missed a scheduled appearance at the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday morning. Burrows later joined the proceedings via phone, explaining that Lehrmann was unavailable due to "urgent medical issues and tests" and requested an adjournment. While police did not oppose the adjournment, they indicated the possibility of issuing a warrant for Lehrmann's arrest. Prosecutor Bunewat Keo stated, "We have a strong prima facie case" related to the incident from November 2024. Magistrate Robert Webster ordered a warrant to be held in court, pending two conditions: the submission of a medical certificate and the requirement for both Lehrmann and Burrows to appear in person at a rescheduled hearing on December 4. Webster urged Burrows to ensure that the medical certificate was submitted promptly. As of Friday afternoon, the court confirmed that no certificate had been received. In a separate statement, Burrows mentioned that a "professional standards command complaint has been made in respect of the prosecutor," but did not provide further details. Despite his reported medical issues, which have not been disclosed, Lehrmann was able to attend a Federal Court session earlier in the week concerning unrelated matters. The court will determine whether Lehrmann's failure to provide the medical certificate constitutes a violation of the magistrate's order. Lehrmann's legal troubles have been ongoing since 2021, when he was accused of raping fellow Liberal staff member Brittany Higgins at Parliament House. A trial was abandoned in 2022 due to juror misconduct. In 2024, the Federal Court found that the rape occurred on the balance of probabilities, dismissing Lehrmann's defamation suit against Network Ten and presenter Lisa Wilkinson. Lehrmann is currently appealing that decision. Earlier this week, Lehrmann appeared in Federal Court regarding allegations of misappropriating secret documents related to French submarines. He is also seeking financial assistance from the federal government following a raid on his home by the National Anti-Corruption Commission in June 2024. During the court session on Thursday, Magistrate Webster criticized Burrows for not understanding the nature of the hearing, known as a "contest mention." This type of hearing allows parties to discuss evidence and assess their chances of success before a full hearing, which could lead to a change in plea. Court documents indicate that Burrows had been informed multiple times about the nature of the contest mention. Burrows also requested that the medical certificate be sealed and not released to the media, to which Webster responded, "Why would it be?" Police allege that Lehrmann stole a Toyota Prado in Mountain River, located in southern Tasmania. They have lined up witnesses, including the car owner's family, several officers, and a service station owner, to provide evidence in the case.
