Nancy Pelosi, Speaker Emeritus of the House of Representatives, announced Thursday that she will not run for reelection.

Pelosi, a Baltimore native with deep political ties to the city, plans to leave her congressional seat in 2027 after nearly 40 years in office.

The first woman elected Speaker of the House grew up in Little Italy as part of the prominent D’Alesandro family. Her father and brother both served as mayors of Baltimore, and she faithfully attended St. Leo’s Church every Sunday.

Mary-Ann Campanella, Pelosi’s cousin, is sad about the end of the D’Alesandro era.

“It’s sad for us because it’s the end of an era, the D’Alesandro era,” Campanella said.

Campanella still lives in Little Italy and has watched with pride as Pelosi rose to become the first female Speaker of the Hous
