GAUTIER, Miss. (WLOX) - The Gautier Police Department confirms one person is dead following a crash involving an Amtrak train and a car on Thursday night.

According to officials, the crash took place at the lone railroad crossing on Ladnier Road around 8:15 p.m.

Gautier Police say 29-year-old Tavares Johnson, from Gautier, was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene.

Amtrak released a statement Friday morning saying that Amtrak Train 26 was traveling from New Orleans to Mobile when Thursday’s crash happened.

According to Gautier Police, witnesses say the crossing was down and the vehicle was driving around the crossing when it crashed with the train.

Amtrak says there were no reports of injuries to the approximately 55 passengers and crew on board at the time.
