The Ballard Locks are one of the latest victims of the federal government’s record-breaking shutdown.
While the locks themselves will continue to operate, you won’t be able to watch salmon swim upstream to spawn. The fish ladder viewing room along with the visitor center and south bathroom closed Nov. 2, according to the Seattle District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Only “mission-critical” operations will continue while the government is in a deadlock over appropriations for fiscal year 2026, the Army said. Locks, dams, flood control infrastructure and hydroelectric dams will continue without interruption.
